Sunrise Bistro & Bar at Big Splash, East Coast Park Review

I was invited for a food tasting session at Sunrise Bistro & Bar at Big Splash, East Coast Park and was a little hesitant to go at first. You see, I'm currently pregnant and in my first trimester. And this pregnancy is more difficult than my previous one. I have been puking and feeling nauseous on most days and the idea of eating doesn't really entice me right now. Somehow, I discovered that I can stomach more if the cooking is great. So, I decided to give this food tasting session a go. Afterall, the restaurant is helmed by Chef Vincent Teng who has 22 years experience with The Dining Room, Table 66, Skyve & The scarlet Hotel.

Sunrise Bistro & Bar has a rather casual layout, giving it a relaxed, by the beach feel. The decor was minimal and kept simple. We were served the Festive Communal Dining Set specially put together by Chef Vincent for Christmas 2015.

First up was the Chilled Assorted Seafood Platter with Freshly Shucked Australian Coffin Bay Oysters, White Wine Blanched Live Prawns, Australian Blue Mussels, Venus Clams & Salmon Sashimi.

When I saw the oysters and sashimi, I was like. "Oh man, I cannot have these... Oh well." Hubby tried the oyster first and he egged me on to try it. Yes, my hubby is THAT chill about both my pregnancies. Only after finding out that these Australian Coffin Bay Oysters were freshly delivered on that day itself did I eat one. And it was mind blowing. Yes, it felt just like that to me. The oyster was slightly creamy and not briny. The flesh wasn't that creamy until I wouldn't be able to take more than a few. For this one, I can imagine wolfing down 10 or so easily. It was easy on the palate and really tantalizing. I was surprised I didn't feel queasy eating raw oysters despite my terrible morning sickness. In fact, it left me wanting more. The Australian Blue Mussels are also worth raving about. It was fresh and not powdery nor tough. They went really well with the Roasted Tomato  Dip that came along with the platter. The rest of the seafood were fresh too but these 2 were my favourites. I definitely won't mind going back for more oysters after giving birth. :P~~

The next dish took quite a while to be served. The Orange Cointreau Fizz ($28+++) helped and hubby was telling me he liked it more than the usual Cointreau drinks.

The main course was the Meat Platter with Whole Red Snapper & Cereal Crust, BBQ Black Angus Beef Ribs & Crispy Pork Belly With Five Spice Salt. It came along with Potato & Pumpkin Mash, Seasonal Sauteed Vegetables and also Truffle Fries with Salt. The condiments for this course were pretty interesting, consisting of Homemade Apple & Smoked Tomato Ketchup, Sweet Chilli & Pineapple Salsa and Honey Mustard Sauce.

I reached for the beef first and oh mine, it was so succulent and tender! It was infused with flavours... Chef Vincent specialises in Sous Vide style of cooking and his skills really showed up with this course. The pork belly was equally delicious with a superbly done skin that was crackling as I bit into it. The red snapper was meant to be paired with he Pineapple salsa but I find that it went very well with the delightful Homemade Apple & Smoked Tomato Ketchup. This sauce tasted somewhat like sambal instead and has an Asian twist to it. The taste was pretty unique and intriguing.

While waiting for the extra dish to be served, the guys at the table mentioned that they would have preferred if the whole platter consisted of meat that were more Western style instead of having the fish which made it somewhat Asian. I felt differently though. The fish was light and balanced off the meat platter for me. I guess the guys just can never get enough of meat. :P

Asian Five Spice Duck Leg Confit ($28++) was next and this is not part of the Festive Communal Dining Set. It is Sunrise Bistro & Bar's signature dish and Chef Vincent wanted us to have a try. I am not a fan of Duck Confit but I can see why this is their signature dish. The meat was really tender and juicy, unlike most duck confits that are usually a little drier. Of course, this was cooked using the Sous Vide technique too for 8 hours and that's how the juice gets retained in the meat, giving it its softness. It went well with the passionfruit sauce served with pomegranate and Mandarin orange. I would have liked this dish better if there was more of the passionfruit sauce or if the taste of the Asian Five Spice was stronger.

By then, all 4 of us at the table had our fill already and were ready for the exciting dessert, Salted Egg Yolk & White Chocolate Fondue.

The fondue came with with Banana, Strawberry, Marshmallow, Panettone & Cookies. And the salted egg chocolate went surprisingly well with all these, except for the banana, which tasted kinda weird to me. I am not one with a sweet tooth so this dessert had the right pairing of savoury and sweet flavour for me. As the chocolate fondue got heated up, it didn't get sweeter as it thickened, so yeah!

The whole dining experience was lovely. The food was great and well done. The portion sans the Duck Confit & Orange Cointreau Fizz, was surprisingly sufficient for 2-3 pax . In fact, I would think that it's a little filling for 2 pax. With the fantastic seafood platter, I find the set at $99++ really worth it. It's really good food with a price that's easy on your pocket. With the communal set, it'll be a great way to share a good meal while catching up with your loved ones this holiday season!

For those who enjoy Asian cooking with a French flair, Sunrise Bistro & Bar is really worth a try this festive season!

Redmart.com Review, Online Grocery, Online Supermarket Shopping in Singapore

The first thing I did this morning after getting my coffee is to shop away! Online, that is. Redmart.com supermarket shopping for pasta coking this weekend. Even before I got my own place, I've always relish the thought of online grocery shopping. So, within the first 2 weeks of getting my keys, I've already given Redmart.com a try.

Secure Packaging

What a treat for my miserly arm muscles!

It used to be free delivery for purchases of $79 and above but there's a current promotion that delivers for free with every $49 and above spent. Valid until 31 August 2013 only.

Of course, I jumped at the chance and ordered 2 more rounds. Haha..

What's more, enter the promotional code of likeredmart and get to enjoy additional 10% of your purchase and this 10% applies to even items already on sale!

You'll get to select your preferred delivery dates and the next day slot is usually available.

Payment is also a breeze with online credit card option,  credit card upon delivery or through Paypal and you're done! Easy peasey and hassle free.

The past 3 deliveries were pleasant and on time. Once, the deliveryman was running 10 mins late and he called me on my mobile hone to inform me beforehand. This is what I call good service! Redmart's pricing is like other supermarkets. Some thing are more expensive, and some are cheaper, especially those on sale.

I'm so glad that grocery shopping is made so much easier these days with online shopping. I'll no longer need to lug heavy household items, especially detergent, rice, oil and such. I'm loving it and getting hooked!

My Best Poker Session Ever: Marriage Proposal From My Love!

Bf proposed last night! And in the way I absolutely love love love, which is original and filled with surprises!

It was meant to be a regular poker session and I felt so lucky to have pocket Queens in the first round. The 1st three cards on the table were Queen, X & Jack.  As it went on, 3 players went all in with bf being 1 of them. *Woo hoo* The pot was getting big enough and gave me an adrenalin rush!

When it was my turn to make a call, I hesitated before going all in. I really didn't want to lose all our chips in the first hand even though the odds were in my favour. And so the showdown began... with 2 pocket Queens from me and 2 pocket Jacks from bf and 1 other player that was significant. Hehe....

My heart was pumping when the 4th card opened and it showed a Jack. "That's fine", I thought, "at least the money is going back into bf's pockets" and I still stand a minute chance. With poker, there's always this element or luck, no?

The trash talk went on and when the last card opened, I was stunned for a while. It was a Queen and I've won! But.... why was my winning card so dirty with all those scribbling?? Huh???

It was a split second before I caught the word "MARRY" and I beamed away. What a way to propose! A climax on top of a climax! Bf is so cool!!! :D

He went down on his knees, took out the custom made ring and gave me the flowers. Of course I said yes. Yes, yes, yes and a million times yes!

The Lovely Bouquet of White Roses

It was a moment of blur and flurry. His thoughtfulness and effort makes me beam from ear to ear. The thoughts that went into the ring design, the flowers he got me, the way he orchestrated the whole poker session with friends.... Yes, I'm truly touched.

❤ Thank you baby! I really do feel so so lucky to have met you and have you in my life.

The ring is designed with an infinity love symbol on the side. BF insisted on having this on the ring and he used my tattoo drawings months ago as the reference.

Infinity Love Design On Side Of Ring

I was still contemplating getting the tattoo yesterday when I eventually feel up for it someday. Now, I'll wear it on my engagement ring instead. How meaningful!

I have not told bf this before. He was my inspiration for the infinity love design and I felt so strongly for him at one point, I almost added one more tattoo to my body. But my rational mind got the better of me. Tats really aren't cool when I am older. Haha...

It wasn't the easiest allowing myself to fall in love with him, to bare my soul and just let the feelings flow. I had hoped that our relationship will go on forever but I was hesitant. I wasn't sure he felt the same way then and whether he wanted the same things in life as me.

Yes, this isn't the end of our journey and I know it'll get better because we both want it so.

Last Pic For The Lovely Night

❤ Baby, you're the best bet in my life. Muacks!

On Familiar Grounds

Ever felt that you're back on familiar grounds? Where the only thing that has changed is time that inevitably brings with it, experience and hopefully wisdom.

Only this time around, it's bittersweet.

To know what you've lost and what could be gone. For everything like time, is fleeting...

Not Happy, Not Smiling

For the first time this year, I'm plagued by the gloom bug.

I need space, I need air and I need something exhilarating.

Le Petite Cancale @ Duxton Hill

Fantastic meal @ Le Petite Cancale with bf that made me go ooo..lala...

The crab was creamy (in bf's words), the whelks was fresh and succulent.

The oysters were divine.

The Salted Butter & Caramel Lava Cake was heavenly. And even the bread was good.

The weather was perfect and the company was everything I've always wanted.

As I sipped away on my wine, I felt...

**Bliss**

CA*California Restaurant At Dempsey Hill Review

Bf had an unexpectedly free Saturday this week so we ventured to Dempsey for a relaxing weekend lunch.

Lovely Picture From Jones The Grocer Main Page

It seems like Singaporeans all flock to the same few places on weekends and our first choice of Jones The Grocer was packed! Being the impatient girl that I am, I couldnt bear to wait for 10-30 mins just for a meal that is not that fabulous IMO.

So, Culina was next and it was packed too with some chi chi people eating oysters and sipping white wine. Well, we had to wait for about 20 mins so I crossed that place out too.

We conveniently hop by to the next door restaurant which turned out to be CA*California

I didn't know what to make out of the restaurant and what it serves exactly but the friendly waiter and available seats were just so inviting. Without hesitation, I walked right in to take shelter from the hot hot July sun.

My initial thought was to have a serving of salad since I wasn't even hungry. Somehow, the ambiance had an effect that made me greedy to try the many sandwiches and wraps they serve (and I'm not even a bread person to begin with).

I ordered the recommended BBQ Chicken Burrito at $15.80 and it was tasty! The wrap was so fragrant and perfectly toasted. Stuffed with chicken pieces, mushrooms and melted cheddar cheese, I just couldn't stop chomping away. This dish is yummy and the portion is just nice. The only thing I didn't like about it was the guacamole sauce.

Bf chose the In-coming Burger. It cost $14.80 and you can add ingredients by topping up more (for eg, $4 for cheese which we find pricey).

Anyway, he didn't add anything to it and he felt that the burger was a little bland without sauce or cheese. It helped by  adding some salsa / taco sauce to the burger. But I really like the way the dish was presented with 2 slices of orange. It made the whole serving more appetizing and seemingly more wholesome.

So, we had a good dish and a not so good one. Overall, I would say this is a pretty decent and cozy place to go to at Dempsey, especially when the other places are always so crowded!

The indoor seats are pretty limited and I was surprised that we could get a seat immediately. The booth that we were seated in was quaint and provided some privacy with the curtains.

In fact, CA*California shares the same space as Ben & Jerry's which is located right on the other side of their kitchen.

I was happy enough with the orange as my dessert that day. And bored enough to blog about this.

Lipstick Sales An Indicator Of Economic Health

Lipstick sales has been said to go up when during times of economic uncertainty. Just because it's considered an affordable indulgence.

Oooo.... I so understand that sentiment. I love my lipsticks, particularly my M.A.C lippies

I've just exchanged 6 used MAC items for a free Party Line lipstick yesterday and it makes me happy. Really love it that MAC has this "Back To MAC" program, allowing me to enjoy this little indulgence for free many times.

MAC lipstick never fail to make my heart skip a beat. I love its faint vanilla scent and can lick it right off. Mmmmm... :P

My Drama Christmas Eve 2010

I heard a piece of good news from the Chinese radio station today:

SPF Media Releases
28 Dec 2010
Yishun Housebreaker Nabbed
Police have arrested a 21-year-old man who is believed to be involved in a series of break-ins in the Yishun housing estate.

Since 22 December 2010 , a spate of break-ins was reported in the Yishun housing estate where flats along the common corridor were targeted. The suspect was believed to have reached in through unsecured windows or used a bamboo pole to “fish” out cash and valuables such as wallets and mobile phones.

Following the reports, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducted extensive enquiries and follow-up investigations to establish the identity of the suspect. The breakthrough came on 28 December 2010 at about 2.45 am, when a public tip-off led officers to arrest the suspect after he was sighted behaving suspiciously outside a unit in Yishun Central.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 29 December 2010 for the offence of Housebreaking and Theft by Night under Section 457 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of 14 years.

Acting Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Superintendent of Police Manimaran Pushpanatan, commended his officers for their swift response and good investigative work.  He also advised residents to secure their units, common corridor windows and valuable items before leaving the house or going to bed.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS DEPARTMENTSINGAPORE POLICE FORCE
28 December 2010 @ 7pm

Well done!! The police did a great job!!

Yes, I was one of his Christmas Eve victims. It was a blessing that he only got away with my iPhone earpiece, 1 inexpensive pen and a EZ-Link card with about $10. He got all these items by fishing out my Burberry handbag with 2 poles. My sister found my discarded bag by the staircase and brought it home.

I'm thankful that the loss was minimal and it's a small price to pay for ensuring that I won't take safety for granted even here in Sunny & Safe island of Singapore. He was caught while loitering around 2.45am in the middle of the night!

And for consolation, I got my iPhone replaced with a brand new one the next day when the silver volume button dropped off. Even Singtel gave me a present this Christmas! ;)

Japanese Restaurant Chako at West Coast (Hong Leong Garden Shopping Centre)

Bf's birthday falls on this weekend. And to prolong the happiness he had from our very recent Japan trip, he wanted to have Japanese birthday meal.

After a quick search online, I decided to lunch at:

Hong Leong Garden Shopping Centre
134 West Coast Way S(127064)
Tel: 6776 3919

The restaurant is tucked away at West Coast and has a homely feel. It is run by a Japanese lady boss who speaks a little English and her daughter, who can speak English.

I called to make reservation a day earlier and received their menu through email. It was stated that they prepare their ingredients only when needed hence it would help if we place order beforehand. We did and it might have reduce our waiting time to be served.

Inside, they provide Japanese comics and magazines while you wait to be served and there's even a photo of President Nathan taken in the same restaurant some time back.

We were first served fragrant roasted barley tea when we settled in. While bf kept himself occupied with his favourite golf stuff, I just snapped away with a soft traditional Japanese music playing away in the background.

For starter, we had the Ikabata-yaki, cuttlefish sired fried with butter and garlic. And I must say, this is the best fried cuttlefish I've had. We would definitely want to order this starter if we do visit Restaurant Chako again.

I had the Gyutamaju set meal which is thinly sliced beef with egg and onion gravy over rice, whereas bf had the Beef Hamburg Steak set meal which really is like a fusion dish with beef patty and spaghetti. For the set meal, it even came with rice in addition to the spaghetti; good for big eaters! Both were good but not fantastic.

It was a plus for us today as we had the whole place to ourselves for lunch.

As for the dessert, I had Soya Vanilla ice-cream and bf had Tofu Cheesecake with Tofu Chocolate. I prefer the former which was a light and refreshing sweet ending to my meal.

Restaurant Chako would be a nice charming place for a sit down meal. And it has a really impressive selection of around 50 mains or so. The food down to the sauces are all handmade. If you can pay by cash, they'll even offer you a 10% discount costing us about $30 each for this meal.

3rd IPL Session at Musee Platinum Tokyo (Brazilian Session)

As promised, I'll share my 3rd IPL Session at Musee Platinum Tokyo which includes an additional IPL for down under here.

The whole process took about 1 hour 15 mins to complete. Hence, it's important to book your appointment in advance and ensure you're not in a rush on that day.

Anyway, the therapist (Mei Ling) that attended to me was friendly and professional. I was asked to change into the paper panties and the robe below before starting the IPL down under. It's for easy access. ;)

I was told that we don't have to shave whatsoever before the treatment as they'll do it for us. But I think it may help if you trim it short so that it's easier for them to shave.

After putting on the protective glasses, I was given additional towel to cover my eyes. It helped with the embarrassment because I was like an ostrich with the head in the sand. The treatment then begins with the paper panties being cut open. It was awkward for me to have a stranger being so close to my privates and I found the shaving to be quite ticklish.

The whole time, the therapist was reassuring and checked to see if I felt ok. There's altogether 5 small parts if you want to have IPL done down under.
The only tedious part (more so for the therapist) was the shaving as it was done meticulously and took more than half an hour to complete. As for the IPL process, it was very fast and quite painless as usual.

After the cold gel application, I got my first IPL zap. It felt like a small shock but I think it was due to my nervousness. The rest of the zaps felt almost painless like the slight sensation you'll feel for underarms IPL. Just let the therapists know if you're uncomfortable and they will adjust the IPL intensity.

Cold towels will be given after the treatment just like for the underarms.

And yeah, I'll be going back for more. I might just get use to the embarrassment after a few more times.

A Painful Week : Wavehouse n Sunset Grill & Pub

Pain can be addictive. Don't you think?

I went to Wavehouse @ Sentosa my friends 2 days ago and it was fun, fun, fun!! Initially, I was a little apprehensive about the pain when I fell. But I brushed the thought aside and just went ahead. I would fall anyway and there's no point thinking about it. And thankfully, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

It was fun 'coz standing up and balancing has a lot to do with overcoming my own mental state. Looking ahead at where I would like to be and visualizing surfing helped me to gain balance quickly. Once again, this reaffirms that focusing on the small things and worrying does not help.

The body aches came only the next day and my bruises appeared 2 days later.

It didn't help that I had a bad fall on my butt while blading yesterday. Now, my whole body is in pain and it can even be torturous to move around on the bed.

Yet, I feel so accomplished and really had a blast that night!

Tonight, we had our dinner of Fiery Buffalo Wings and more from Sunset Grill & Bar @ Seletar Airbase.

The wings were only Level 5 but look at my lips! Even my cheeks were flushed. The trick is to avoid touching the lips and put the meat right into the mouth. And of course, it'll be great if you can down mugs of beer in between. "Burp"

I really wonder how anyone can manage to finish up the Level 30 wings.

We weren't ready for that much pain yet so we had a slow meal with the beautiful sunset to end our mildly painful week.

We'll be back for more!
